Accounting & Audit

Private AI Infrastructure the Biggest Firms Would Trust

A fully private, multi-model AI environment delivered 332% ROI for early adopters and cleared the SOC 2 Type II bar required by the largest accounting firms in North America.

The Challenge

Our client builds AI agents that automate the most time-intensive parts of an audit. Those parts include managing client document requests, testing audit attributes, generating workpapers, and handling quality-management compliance. The product worked. The barrier was trust.

The largest accounting firms handle highly sensitive client financial data under strict regulatory oversight. They would not adopt a shared SaaS model. Each firm needed:

  • A dedicated, isolated deployment inside its own cloud tenant
  • Zero public internet exposure for the AI layer, covering every model call, document pipeline, and retrieval query
  • Full traceability, with every AI output tied to a verifiable source
  • Rapid, repeatable rollout, so each new firm didn't become a months-long custom build

Without infrastructure that met that bar, enterprise growth was capped.

What We Built

A Fully Private Azure Environment

We designed an environment where all traffic stays on the internal network. The only path in from the outside is a single, hardened entry point: an Application Gateway with a Web Application Firewall in prevention mode. The network is segmented into dedicated subnets for application hosting, private endpoints, the database, and secure engineer access. Network security groups enforce strict controls on each subnet. Engineers reach private resources through Azure Bastion, never through public IPs.

Multi-Model AI Over Private Networking

We deployed a multi-model Azure OpenAI environment that powers the platform's AI agents and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) pipeline:

  • GPT-4o and GPT-4o-mini for agent reasoning, workpaper generation, and attribute testing
  • GPT-4-Turbo for complex, multi-step audit analysis
  • Ada-2 embeddings for semantic document search and retrieval

Every model endpoint runs through Private Link with private DNS, so inference never leaves the private network. Token quotas and rate limits are managed in code for cost control across deployments.

Secure Document Intelligence

Audit evidence arrives as invoices, bank statements, and other unstructured documents. We integrated Azure Document Intelligence to extract structured data from them. The pipeline is backed by:

  • Private Blob Storage for documents
  • PostgreSQL for application data
  • Azure Key Vault for secrets, key rotation, and certificates

Repeatable, Single-Tenant Deployment

All infrastructure is defined as modular Terraform with environment-specific configurations. Changes are peer-reviewed and deployed through Azure DevOps pipelines with automated validation. Application releases use CI/CD with zero-downtime deployment slots.

The result is a reference architecture that deploys the same way for every new firm.

The Results

  • 332% ROI for early-adopter firms through AI-driven workflow automation
  • ~300 hours saved per engagement from automated audit testing and workpaper generation
  • 100% traceability, with every AI decision backed by verifiable, auditable sources
  • Zero client-data exposure, because data never leaves the firm's own Azure environment
  • SOC 2 Type II certification, clearing the security bar set by the largest accounting firms in North America

This architecture became the foundation of the client's enterprise go-to-market strategy. Adoption continues to grow across top-tier firms.
