Food Safety

Passing the Audit That Nearly Cost the Contract

A security-first rebuild of a legacy inspection platform, moved from VB.NET to containerized .NET Core on Azure, passed a make-or-break client security audit at 100% compliance with zero rollout downtime.

The Challenge

Our client provides food safety services to hundreds of food processing plants across North America. Its core software platform, a legacy VB.NET application, ran food safety inspections, water pressure monitoring, and chemical control automation. These are operational functions tied directly to compliance with federal food safety standards.

The platform had serious limitations:

  • No multi-factor authentication and improper password handling, failing industry-standard security audits
  • On-premises hosting, creating performance bottlenecks and no way to scale across distributed plant locations
  • An outdated technology stack that made the system hard to maintain and harder to modernize
  • Growing cybersecurity risk, magnified after a widely reported ransomware attack on a major meat processor triggered security reviews across the food industry

Then the client's largest customer ran a security audit, and the platform failed. The ultimatum was clear: modernize the system or lose deployment across every one of that customer's facilities.

A modernization effort was already underway but had stalled under previous leadership. TechVora was brought in to take over and deliver a rapid, secure, cloud-first rebuild under tight scrutiny, one that would restore customer confidence and scale with the business.

What We Built

We rebuilt the platform from the ground up with a security-first, cloud-native approach, turning a fragile legacy application into an enterprise-grade system on Microsoft Azure.

A Full Rebuild in .NET Core

We re-engineered the application from VB.NET to .NET Core, making it modular, maintainable, and cross-platform. Every component was containerized with Docker for portability and scale.

Cloud Migration and IoT Integration

The rebuilt platform runs in Azure. Azure IoT Hub securely collects high-volume, high-frequency data from devices on the plant floor, enabling real-time monitoring and analysis across facilities.

Security by Design

Security was built into every layer:

  • MFA and single sign-on through the client's enterprise identity provider
  • Encryption at rest and in transit for all sensitive data
  • Azure Firewall, private networking, and strict access policies for end-to-end protection

DevOps and Automation

Azure DevOps CI/CD pipelines replaced manual releases, cutting release cycles from weeks to hours and retiring hands-on server management.

Data Migration and Reporting

Legacy data moved securely to Azure SQL Database. Power BI dashboards now give plant performance, compliance, and system health visibility on desktop and mobile.

Training and Change Enablement

We trained the client's IT and operations teams hands-on, so adoption was smooth, security hygiene improved, and the platform stays sustainable long term.

The Results

  • 100% compliance with the largest customer's security audit, and with other client audits since
  • Zero downtime during a phased rollout to production plants across North America
  • 60% faster data processing and reporting through cloud-native architecture and IoT integration
  • Release cycles cut from weeks to hours with automated CI/CD
  • Much lower maintenance overhead, with manual server management replaced by automated DevOps workflows
  • Customer confidence restored, preventing the loss of the client's largest contract

The platform is now built to add plants, users, and data sources without re-engineering.
